About Me

My name is James Albert Higgs II and I am the Special Education Director and Band Director for Cotton Center ISD.  I am in my twenty-first  year of teaching and I have primarily taught in small school districts.  Over my career I have taught grades Kindergarten through Grade Twelve; most of the time those classes would follow one after the other. In small school districts a teacher has the joys and challenges of teaching multiple grade levels, subjects and performing numerous administrative duties that teachers in larger districts never get the opportunity to perform.

The result of these years of teaching in small districts has given me a more universal and interdisplinary understanding of the educational process.  I have seen how technology provides an opportunity for students in rural districts to access the same experiences, collaborate with other students from around the state, nation and globe and have exposure to the same high quality educational instruction that students in larger urban districts have.  I have developed a good understanding of not only the needs and expectations of teachers but also of the administrative process.

I am currently certified to teach grades  Pre-k through 8th grade as a Classroom Generalist, Grades 4-8 as a Science Specialist, Grades 6-12 as a Composite Social Studies Teacher, Grades 9-12 as a History teacher, Grades Pre-K-12 as a Music Education Teacher, Grades 6-12 as a Secondary Instrumental Education Teacher and Grades Pre-K as a Special Education Teacher.  I am also certified in as an EC-12 Principal and as an EC-12 Superintendent.  I hold these certifications in the states of Texas and Oklahoma.

I hold an Associate of Arts degree from Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma. I hold the Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha, Oklahoma.  I hold the Master of Science degree in Educational Administration from Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas.  I also hold the Superintendent Certificate from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. I am currently working to complete a Master's in Educational Technology.

The tools I have gained from working toward a Master's Degree in Educational Technology have allowed me to grow as a professional and to enhance the learning experiences of the students I am honored to teach.
